# Bodies, Files and Forgotten Gods

The autumn issues arrive with a quieter precision this week. Shonen’s latest arrival treats the body as a map of decisions rather than a canvas for explosions, while a 1998 disc asks whether intimacy with a character is better measured in scenes or in clinical notes. Elsewhere, memory itself becomes a commodity that can be priced and transferred.

These pieces sit alongside an older serial that reads the gods by touch, and two discreet offers for readers who prefer their evenings shaped by tools rather than by waiting.

## Manga: The Scalpel and the Shrine

Kyo Tanimoto’s *Under Doctor* lands in Weekly Shonen Jump with the composure of a procedure rather than the roar of a power system. Haiji Kino sees vital points the way other protagonists see aura; he can mend or disable with equal fluency, and the early chapters keep the tension in the margin between those two acts. Tanimoto, once an assistant to Horikoshi, withholds the usual city-level destruction in favour of annotated anatomy and ethical refusals. The result feels newly adult inside a magazine still fond of spectacle.

Restraint as a radical gesture is rare enough in Jump to be worth watching; the question is whether the clinical eye can sustain longer arcs without defaulting to the familiar roar.

Fibi Dori’s *The Oracles of Kami* offers a different kind of reading. Miyato, an oracle who extracts divine memory by touch, travels with his enormous furred brother under imperial commission. The opening case concerns a village convinced that the nearly extinct sacred beast Arahabaki has returned; the investigation proceeds by residue and rumour rather than by combat. Dori’s line is clean, emblematic, closer to pop-art poster than to dense cross-hatching.

A horror-tinged shonen that prefers the slow erosion of certainty to the decisive strike; the gender-shifting detail around the brothers sits lightly inside the folklore rather than as a stunt.

## Anime: Memory as a Priced Commodity

Masaaki Yuasa’s 2008 series *Kaiba* remains one of the decade’s most radical originals. Consciousness travels on chips between bodies; the wealthy live above the storm while the poor scramble for remaining vessels. Yuasa’s soft, almost toy-like designs make the system’s violence more rather than less unsettling. Warp wakes with a hole through his chest and a locket containing a blurred face; each transfer rewrites social position and, gradually, the question of whether any continuous self survives.

Comment: Animation used as a laboratory rather than as packaging; the pastel palette and rounded forms keep the argument about class and continuity from ever feeling abstract.

## Retro: The Filing Cabinet Adaptation

Two months after *Serial Experiments Lain* left television, Pioneer LDC released a PlayStation disc that asks almost nothing of the thumbs. Sold as a network simulator, it offers therapy transcripts, diary fragments and clinical notes; the player navigates a hierarchy of files rather than a plot. An alternative story introduces Touko Yonera, a psychiatrist who does not exist in the series, and redraws the boundary between girl and Wired as a boundary between two women in a room. The disc was never officially translated and has largely remained a collector’s mention.

An adaptation that declines to reproduce the images people already loved and invents a witness through whom the familiar girl becomes a case; intimacy here is shared paperwork rather than shared spectacle.
